Extra-soft bristled toothbrushes are good for those who have sensitive teeth or have had recent dental treatment. Many people believe hard-bristled ones are effective in cleansing plaque. Brushing with a hard-bristled brush too vigorously can make teeth sensitive. Soft and extra-soft bristled toothbrushes are best for effective brushing.

The shape of bristle needs to be wavy, flat or trimmed to a dome shape. These are effective in cleaning teeth and gums. For better teeth protection you can also go for bristles with rounded tips. When to change your toothbrush?
American Dental Association (ADA) recommends to replace your toothbrush when it starts wearing or once in every three months, whichever happens first. A worn-out toothbrush cannot clean the teeth properly and can also damage gum tissue. It is also important to replace your toothbrush whenever you recover from an illness, especially from infections like cold, flu, throat infection, etc., because the bristles may have disease causing germs, which when you re-use, after recovery can make you sick again.

A new toothbrush improves oral hygiene by removing 30% more plaque than a brush that has been used for more than three months.

Brush teeth every day in front of a mirror to make sure that you cover every tooth. Brushing twice a day will not only keep your oral hygiene but will also enable you to speak and smile with confidence.

What is Nerve Repositioning Procedure?

The changes in the inferior alveolar nerve are done by the nerve repositioning. This is for providing sensation to the chin or lower lip areas. This procedure is done in prior to dental implants treatment. This may be compulsory to ensure that the nerve won’t be damaged or touched during the actual placement of the dental implants. By this procedure the candidate who needs dental implants but don’t have sufficient jaw bone height or mass to begin with will get benefited.

The procedure for the nerve repositioning is as follows:

  • First, the dentist makes an incision on the patient’s lower jawbone or on the gums of the patient.
  • Then the inferior alveolar nerve is repositioned on the side ways out of its canal very carefully. Then places the implants immediately or it is left for healing. Then the dental implants will securely screw into the lower jaw bone with carefully. Then the dental implant is provided with for more support by the placement of the irradiated bone around it.
  • Then surgical pad or the collatape is placed between the dental implant and the inferior alveolar nerve which provides necessary cushioning and additional support to the nerve.
  • The procedure will be completed by providing the addition of more irradiated bone to the dental implant to provide even more support. Then it needs two or more months to healing time which is to ensure that the proper integration with the surrounding tissues that has been completed.
  • Then the dental crowns and the dental bridges have been fixed to the dental implant after the healing time is completed.

All this constitutes the procedure for nerve repositioning.

Role of Vitamin D in Human Body

Vitamin D helps in better absorption of calcium. Vitamin strengthens bones. The vitamin is absorbed naturally by the body directly from sunlight when the body is exposed to the sun for a certain amount of time and therefore it is named as “sunshine vitamin”.

Excess of vitamin D can damage the kidneys, can develop kidney stones and heart attack because of over deposit of calcium.

Vitamin C: Its Role in Human Body

Vitamin C or L-ascorbic acid or ascorbate is a water soluble vitamin and it is an important nutrient for human growth and development. This is a vitamin that can neither be made nor stored in the body but can easily be eliminated from the body and hence these have to be supplied continuously by taking proper food or diet.

Vitamin C reduces the risk of some cancers, protects immune system, cardiovascular system, bones and teeth, healthy connective tissue, reduces the problems related to cancer, heart, eyes and skin, maintains good blood levels, reduces the risk of common cold and mild problems, helps heal wounds quickly.

Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant, therefore can prevent the damage caused from free radicals of the body. It plays a vital role in converting fat into energy.

Vitamin C can be obtained from a wide variety of fruits and vegetables like oranges, strawberries, potatoes, spinach, broccoli, red and green pepper, tomato juice, lemon, kiwi fruit, mango, papaya, banana, carrot etc.

Over cooking and storage of vitamin C foods reduces the content of vitamin C. Raw fruits and vegetables are the best sources to obtain vitamin C.

Deficiency of vitamin C leads to disease scurvy which leads to problems with skin, bleeding gums and mucous membranes, and also causes problems like anemia, dry skin and hair, joint pains, decreases the rate of healing the wound.

It is good to obtain higher amounts of vitamin C for smokers and also pregnant and feeding mothers.

Does Everyone Need Vitamin Supplements?

Every one needs vitamins in small amounts, and every one can obtain them from their daily diet. Taking fresh vegetables and fruits in several sittings will provide you healthy and nutritious life. Taking a multivitamin daily is harmless, but it is also not useful if you are healthy and if you don’t require them.

Who need these vitamin supplements? People who need more vitamins than they require, people whose bodies can’t absorb vitamins through their diets. These people may need vitamin supplements and the people who are under this category are:

  • Pregnant women generally need more vitamins than usually.
  • Lactating mothers or feeding mothers: these women require more vitamins as they feed their child continuously and they will be in need of more vitamins.
  • Growing children, the children below five years need more vitamins, but they will not eat all types of varied foods which leads to deficiency of certain vitamins.
  • Teenagers, who are very busy in their schedules will not find time to eat proper diet.
  • People who are addicted to tobacco, alcohol etc.
  • People who have digestive problems can’t obtain or absorb vitamins from their diets.
  • Some people who are having seizures also can’t absorb vitamins from their diet.

To these people, vitamin supplements are provided by the doctor in recommended doses and vitamin supplements vary from one person to another. Like for pregnant woman, vitamin B9 or Folic acid is essential, for children vitamin B or C or D is essential, for memory problems vitamin B or C is essential, for smokers vitamins B and C are required, for vegetarians, vitamin B12 is required as they don’t eat non-vegetarian food.

Any vitamin it may be, but it should not be consumed in excess or it should not be consumed without the prescription of the doctor. Because it may do harm rather than good.
