How SMPP is Used in Sending SMS

Short message service(SMS) is the service which we think of as soon as we think about a mobile. One can send a message from one mobile to other by paying small amount. This is one of the fastest non-voice communication which is generally used.

But behind the transfer of the messages, there is a protocol which is commonly used. This protocol behind the message is short message peer to peer protocol (SMPP). This protocol is used for transferring the messages between the SMS centers and/or the External Short messaging entities.

An Irish company called Aldiscon initially designed and developed this protocol. Based on the pairs of request/response PDUs the protocol depends. The latest version of this protocol is SMPP v5.0.

For transferring the SMS there are even many protocols. But, the main protocol which is under usage is the SMPP. So, one can consider this SMPP as a standard for sending and receiving SMS messages. Now, the SMPP organization is renamed as the SMS forum. The SMPP v3.3 is the most widely and commonly used version.
