Difference Between Contact And Non-contact Readers

The barcode scanners can be grouped into two main categories namely contact readers and non-contact readers.

Contact readers: These devices can be usually held in the hands. In order to read a barcode this type of readers should either touch the code or come close to it. Benefits of Contact barcode readers are:

  • They are compact in size and very simple to use.
  • They are best suited for small businesses
  • They require Low maintenance
  • Price of these readers is less compared to a laser gun or a CCD reader.
  • They are considered as the basic scanner when using it for the first time.

Non-contact readers: These devices will not require close contact with the barcode to read the code. These scanners can utilize either a moving beam or a stationary beam, but generally moving laser light beam is used. These scanners are available in both handheld and fixed mount configurations. Benefits of non-contact readers are:

  • Non-contact readers can be used from a distance of several inches to several feet based on the scanner design and the capacity of the input. So, non-contact scanners can be used in any barcode reading application.
  • These scanners are generally put into use in a situation when the input cannot be transported near the scanner such as heavy machinery or objects.
  • The fixed position non-contact readers are best preferred for applications where the items can be moved over the scanner.
  • These scanners are best suited for the flexibility or mobility applications.
  • These scanners can do high-end and heavy-duty work for extended durations.
