Strategies Involved in Machine Translation

Machine translation is the method of translating documents without any human intervention. Machine translation is the process where a computer program analyzes a source text and generates a target text. Machine Translation (MT) is not same as that of Computer Assisted Translation (CAT). Translation are used for different purposes.

  • The direct strategy: It is initial step to be used in machine translation systems. Direct strategy involves least possible linguistic theory. It is dependent on a stated source language-target language in which each word of the source language is related to a corresponding term in the target language. But there will be unidirectional correlation.
  • The transfer strategy: The transfer strategy provides importance to the idea of level of representation. This strategy consists of three stages. The analysis stage is nothing but a direct strategy which illustrates the source document linguistically, with the help of source language dictionary. The transfer stage will modify the results of the analysis stage and generates the linguistic and structural likeness between the two languages. A bilingual dictionary is utilized to translate the source language to target language. The third stage is the generation stage which generates the target language document depending on linguistic data of the source language with the help of target language dictionary.
  • The pivot language strategy: This strategy is depending on the concept of producing a description of the document or text independent of any specific language. This representation will work as a neutral, universal translated text which is different from both the source language and the target language.
